Wedding invitation wording: 73 examples to copy

Wedding guides 03/11/2026 13 min read

Good wedding invitation wording says who is getting married, when, where and how to reply, in the tone of your day. Here are 73 wedding invitation wording examples ready to copy: classic, religious, civil, short, romantic, quirky and funny. You will also find what few people explain: how to ask for an RSVP, with or without a QR code, and how to mention children or a gift fund without it sounding awkward.

What to include in your wedding invitation wording

Before you pick an example, check that your wording answers these questions. If one is missing, your guests will message you to ask:

  • Who is inviting: the two of you, your parents or everyone together.
  • Who is getting married: your names, without surnames if the invitation is informal.
  • When: the day of the week, the full date and the time.
  • Where: the ceremony venue and the reception venue, if they differ.
  • How to reply: a contact or a QR code, and the deadline.

Everything else (coaches, accommodation, gifts, dress code) fits better on a separate card or on a wedding website. An invitation with twelve details does not get read, and guests ask you on WhatsApp anyway.

Copy the wording you like with the button on each example, then change the names, the date and the venues.

Wedding invitation wording for an adults-only wedding

Say it in writing, warmly and without over-explaining. If there are exceptions, tell those families in person.

We want this evening to be just for you.
That is why we have planned an adults-only wedding.
Thank you for understanding.

We adore your little ones,
but we want you to enjoy the night without watching the clock.
The celebration is for adults only.

We will have a supervised play area for the children,
so they can play while you dance.
Please tell us how many are coming when you reply.

Because of the space we have,
this invitation is for the people named on the envelope only.
Thank you for your understanding.

Wedding invitation wording for gifts, bank details or a gift list

This is the hardest part to write. Our advice: keep it off the main card. Put it on a separate card, a QR code or the website, and mention it naturally.

Your company is the best present we could ask for.
If you would also like to help with our honeymoon,
here are our bank details.

We already have a home, a sofa and even a toaster.
If you would like to give us something,
we will put it towards our honeymoon.

The most important thing is that you are there.
And for those who have asked,
we have set up a gift list at this link.

We expect nothing more than your presence,
but if you insist, you will help make a dream come true:
our trip to Japan.

The best present is seeing you dance.
The second best fits in this account.

RSVP wording for wedding invitations

This is the line people forget most, and the one that saves you the most work. It must say how to reply and by when. If you are unsure about the classic phrase, here is what RSVP wording for wedding invitations means and how to use it.

By phone or WhatsApp

RSVP by 1 May
to Marta (600 000 000) or Pablo (600 000 001).

So that nobody is left without a seat,
let us know if you are coming by 1 May.

Please reply by 1 May.
Our wedding planner will thank you. The caterers even more.

Tell us if you are coming by 1 May,
and whether you have any allergies or intolerances.

With an RSVP QR code

If your invitation is on paper, an RSVP QR code stops replies arriving from five different places. Guests scan it and tell you if they are coming, with whom and what they would like to eat.

Example of paper wedding invitation wording with an RSVP QR code

RSVP here

Scan the code and tell us if you are coming.
You have until 1 May.

Coming? Point your camera here.
It takes a minute, and it saves our sanity.

Reply with this QR code
by 1 May. Tell us what you would like to eat
and whether you have any allergies.

No calls, no messages:
scan the QR code and we will know you are coming.

Here you can reply, choose your menu and book a seat on the coach.
All in a minute, from your phone.

If you don’t know what to do with a QR code,
ask your youngest cousin.
You have until 1 May.

Mistakes to avoid in your wedding invitation wording

  1. Not giving a deadline. Without one, half your guests reply the week before.
  2. Giving the party time instead of the ceremony time. Write the time guests need to be seated, and leave a few minutes of margin.
  3. Forgetting the day of the week. It helps people plan, and it catches a date that was typed wrong.
  4. Cramming in every detail. Coaches, accommodation, dress code and bank details do not fit on a card. Move them to your wedding website.
  5. Not proofreading the names. Ask someone else to read the proof before you print. Also see our guide to wedding invitation paper if you have not chosen yours yet.

What if you are not printing anything

All of this wedding invitation wording works for a digital wedding invitation too. It is sent by WhatsApp and carries the map, the countdown and the RSVP inside, so the wording can be even shorter.

Frequently asked questions

What do you put in wedding invitation wording?

Who is inviting, the names of the couple, the day of the week, the date and the time, the ceremony and reception venues, and how to RSVP with a deadline. The rest of the information fits better on a separate card or a wedding website.

What do you write on a unique wedding invitation?

The same details as on any other invitation, but told your way: like a boarding pass, a film poster, a recipe or a funny line. What makes it unique is that it sounds like you, without losing the date, the time and the place.

Whose name goes first on a wedding invitation?

There is no strict rule. By tradition the bride's name often comes first, but today each couple chooses the order they prefer, including for two grooms or two brides.

How do you ask for an RSVP on a wedding invitation?

With a line that says how to reply and by when, for example: "Please reply by 1 May". You can give a phone number or add a QR code that opens a form, where guests also add plus-ones, menu choice and allergies.

Should you put bank details on a wedding invitation?

Better not on the main card. The most graceful way is a separate card, a QR code or your wedding website, with simple wording that makes clear the most important thing is that guests come.

How do you say on a wedding invitation that children are not invited?

With a short, warm sentence and no long justification, for example: "We want you to enjoy the night without watching the clock, so the celebration is for adults only". If there are exceptions, tell those families in person.

How far in advance should you send wedding invitations?

Usually three to four months before the wedding, and a little earlier if guests have to travel. The RSVP deadline is normally set four to six weeks before the day.
